A study published by the Austrian government on Tuesday November 11, identified serious health threats of genetically engineered (GE) crops. Mice fed with GE maize (Monsanto's NK603xMON810) were severely impaired in their fertility, and produced fewer children than mice fed with natural crops.
This study shows how little we know about GM products and their long-term impacts on our health and the environment. It also shows how flawed the current EU risk assessment is too.
We can make it right. On December the 4th, they will decide on the reform of the EU GMO risk assessment system. Please make sure that:
Monsanto GM maize MON810, NK603 and the hybrid NK603 x MON810 are recalled immediately
The GMO risk assessment is strengthened, as required under EU law
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is reformed by giving it the necessary scientific expertise to carry out complex environmental and health risk assessments
GM contamination of seeds is prevented, to allow the survival of conventional and organic agriculture
Each member state retains control over its national territory and decides on the use of its land by establishing GMO-free areas
Until the EU risk assessment procedures are revised, no GMOs should be granted an authorisation.
After ten years of propaganda, GMOs haven't fulfilled their promises. On the contrary, GMO cultivation has lead to more use of pesticides, lower yields, higher production costs and threats to food security. There is increasing scientific evidence worldwide highlighting the risks that GMOs pose to our health, environment and agriculture.
At a time of worldwide food and economic crises, GMOs are a dangerous distraction from the real solutions to tackle hunger, climate change and food security.
